Submission Guidelines

Current call: Volume 1, Issue 2. Submissions close on 30 November 2026. The issue will be published in December 2026. JMAG publishes two issues a year; see the publishing schedule.

JMAG (ISSN 3136-4470) is an open-access online magazine of the JAAMIR Foundation. We welcome original creative and reflective writing from students, teachers, scholars and artists everywhere.

What we publish

  • Short stories: up to 3,000 words
  • Poems: up to 3 poems per submission, each up to 40 lines
  • Non-fiction and essays: up to 2,500 words, including writing on education, English language teaching, culture and society
  • Book reviews: 600–1,500 words
  • Photography and art: 1–5 original images, shared through a Google Drive link, with a 70–100 word description (see below)

Before you submit

  • Your work must be original, written by you, and not published elsewhere, including on blogs and social media.
  • If your work is accepted, JMAG holds the exclusive right to publish it, online and in print. You may not republish it anywhere else, but you are welcome to share the JMAG link. See the Publishing Agreement, which you accept when you submit.
  • Write in English and proofread carefully.
  • Add your full name at the top. If you have an ORCID iD, add it too, for example: by Your Name (ORCID: 0000-0000-0000-0000).
  • Add a short bio of up to 50 words at the end.

Our regular features

Alongside open submissions, every issue includes three regular features.

Voices from the Classroom

An interview with an English teacher from Bangladesh or abroad. Teachers are invited by the editors, and you are welcome to put yourself or a colleague forward through our contact page. Interviewees answer these five questions in 100–200 words each and send a photo and a short bio:

  1. What first made you love the English language or literature?
  2. Describe one lesson or classroom moment that changed the way you teach.
  3. How do you encourage students to read for pleasure?
  4. What is the biggest challenge for English learners where you teach, and how do you help them with it?
  5. Which book would you recommend to every young reader, and why?

JAAMIR Reading Corner

Highlights from each session of the JAAMIR Book Reading Competition: the book, the judges’ comments and a 300–500 word reflection from a winner. Winners are invited by the editors.

First Pages

A space for students and first-time writers. If this is your first published piece, say so at the top of your submission. Selected pieces appear in First Pages with a short note from an editor.

How to submit

  1. Register as a writer with your name and email address.
  2. Wait for an editor to approve your account. You will receive an email with your login details.
  3. Log in, go to Posts → Add New, write or paste your text, and choose a category (Short Story, Poem, Non-fiction, Book Review or Photography/Art).
  4. Click Submit for Review. A box will ask you to accept the Publishing Agreement; tick it and click Submit for Review again. You cannot submit without accepting it. You can keep up to three unpublished submissions at a time.

Writer accounts are for text only, so please do not paste images or videos into your submission. Our editors choose the illustration for each published piece.

Photography and art submissions

Photographers and artists submit through the same writer account. Instead of uploading images, share the original, full-resolution files through Google Drive:

  1. Upload your original image files (not screenshots or compressed copies) to Google Drive.
  2. Set sharing to “Anyone with the link can view” and copy the link.
  3. Create a new post, choose the Photography/Art category, and paste the Google Drive link into a sentence, for example: Original file: https://drive.google.com/…
  4. Add a 70–100 word description of the work, then click Submit for Review.

Your description must include:

  • Title of the work and a few lines about what it shows or means
  • Date and place the photo was taken or the artwork was made
  • Device or medium: camera or phone model (for example, Samsung A73), or the art materials used
  • Image details: resolution in pixels (for example, 4000 × 3000) and, for photos, settings such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO
  • Authenticity: confirm the work is your own and say how it was edited, if at all. AI-generated or AI-altered images are not accepted as photography.

Please keep the Google Drive link active until your work is published. If the link does not open, we cannot review your submission.

What happens next

  • Every submission goes through double-blind review: the managing editor removes your name and details before a reviewer reads it. We may suggest or make small edits for clarity and style.
  • You will hear from us by email once your work has been reviewed.
  • Once your piece is published it is locked. If you need a correction, please contact us.
