JMAG (ISSN 3136-4470) is an open-access online magazine published by the JAAMIR Foundation. These policies explain how we review, publish and look after the work we receive. Please read them together with our Submission Guidelines.
Double-blind review
JMAG uses double-blind review: reviewers do not know who wrote a submission, and authors do not know who reviewed it.
- Submissions come only to the managing editor, who is the only person who sees authors’ names. The managing editor removes the author’s name, ORCID iD, bio and any other identifying details, and sends the other editors an anonymous copy to review.
- Each submission is reviewed by at least one other member of the editorial board or an invited reviewer.
- Reviewers judge each piece on originality, quality of writing, relevance to our readers and respect for others.
- The editors then decide to accept the piece, ask for changes, or decline it. Reviewers’ comments are shared with the author without their names.
- We may make small edits for clarity, grammar and style; any larger change is agreed with the author first.
- Reviewers do not review work they recognise, or work by their own students, family members or close colleagues. Such work goes to another reviewer.
- Editors’ own work is reviewed blind by another member of the board.
- The author’s name and bio are restored when an accepted piece is published.
Originality and plagiarism
- Submissions must be the author’s own work and not published elsewhere, including on blogs and social media.
- Quotations and ideas from other sources must be credited.
- We may check submissions for plagiarism. Plagiarised work is declined, and a piece found to be plagiarised after publication is removed with a notice.
Use of AI tools
- Work written or created by AI tools is not accepted.
- Authors may use tools such as spell checkers or grammar assistants to polish their own writing, but should tell us if they used an AI tool and how.
- AI-generated or AI-altered images are not accepted as photography.
Copyright and publishing rights
- Authors accept the Publishing Agreement when they submit a piece for review. It sets out the rights below in full.
- Authors are always credited as the creators of their work.
- By submitting, authors give JMAG and the JAAMIR Foundation the exclusive right to publish accepted work online, keep it in our archive, share it on our social media, and republish it in other forms, including printed issues, anthologies and books, which may carry their own ISSN or ISBN.
- Once a piece is accepted, authors may not republish it anywhere else, in print or online, including blogs, social media posts, other magazines, books or collections.
- Authors are welcome to share the JMAG link to their piece with anyone, on social media, by email or in their CV and portfolio.
- JMAG does not pay authors, and no fees, royalties or other income from any edition are shared with authors.
- Readers may read JMAG freely and share links to it. Copying or republishing a full piece is not allowed without written permission from JMAG.
Corrections and removal
Published pieces are locked. If an author finds an error, or a reader has a concern about a piece, please write to us through the contact page. We correct factual errors and, where needed, add a note explaining the change.
Respect and safety
We do not publish hate speech, harassment, sexually explicit content, or personal information about private individuals.
Fees
Submitting to and reading JMAG is free. We never charge authors a publication fee.
